A 17-year-old boy from Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, SA, claims that he was tortured and had his fingers cut off by a relative who accused him of theft.
He apparently repeatedly stole from his relative's house.
Last week, he pounced again and took a video camera, pots, cosmetics and a car jack.
On Sunday night, the relative invited him to her house and on arrival he was allegedly tied up with wire and loud music switched on.
He claims from 8pm to 10pm his relative tortured him, saying "I want to teach you that crime doesn't pay,"
"She untied me when she realised I was weak from bleeding. I escaped to my mother's house two streets away, who called the police and an ambulance."
The boy is at Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg, where doctors have told him they must remove three of his fingers.
Meanwhile his relative, Tebogo Mokgwatjane (39) said she was sick of the boy.
She said: "My house is his play ground and when I go to the police, they don't open a case."
She said by chopping his fingers she wanted to teach him not to steal from anyone ever again.
The boy's mother said she was furious.
"She is so heartless. I want her to pay for what she did to my son."
Crystal Park police spokeswoman Tryna Maritz said the police would visit the teen in hospital to help him open a case.
