10 women claim that they were ordered to take all their clothes off in front of two women security guards to prove they hadn't stolen money.
The employees of Pick n Pay in Sherwood, Brakpan, SA, appealed to Daily Sun for justice as nothing came of complaints about the incident some weeks ago.
They said management ordered guards to search them after a colleague's purse with R1 000 went missing.
Angeline Mabomo (50), who was on her period, said she was told to remove her sanitary pad and told to put her fingers into her privates to prove the money wasn't there.
Angeline said: "I felt so degraded. How can another woman make me do this?"
She said the first guard was understanding and let her go, but the second guard insisted on forcing her to prove she didn't have the money.
"She took me to the bathroom. When I resisted, she threatened to klap me – and I had to do as she was saying," said Angeline.
"I complained to the management. They called her to a hearing but she is still here."
Worker Mavis Mbatha (50) said she also had her clothes removed to search for the money.
"I'm old enough to be her mother, but she still ordered me to strip," said Mavis.
Sylvia Phuka (50) said she suffered the same sort of humiliation.
"I have never been more degraded in my life," she said.
Daily Sun spoke to Paulo De Freitas, manager and owner of the Sherwood Pick n Pay, who said he ordered the search because he was not going to tolerate theft in his shop, but what happened was not what he had in mind.
"I gave security an order to search them but I never said they should strip search them," he said.
Security guard Elaine Elliot said the manager told her and the other female guard to search women thoroughly.
"To us it meant we must strip them n*ked."
