A 29-year-old who allegedly kept dead babies in a freezer was granted bail at the Mthatha Magistrates Court in South Africa.

Magistrate Nompumelelo Bango said that although it was a serious schedule six case, it didn't mean Melice Jacobs couldn't get bail.

The investigating officer had said Melice shouldn't get bail as New Brighton residents submitted a petition saying they didn't want her back there.

But Bango said Melice said in writing she wasn't interested in returning but would stay with her mum in Southernwood, Mthatha.

Melice's bail conditions allow her to travel if she informs her nearest police station or investigating officer. She is not allowed to interfere with investigations.

The case was postponed to 9 April for a decision on a trial date. Outside court, Melice's lawyer, Mpumelelo Notununu said: “She was in an abusive previous relationship with her dead boyfriend.”

He said Melice needed the support of every citizen and not only women as her heart is broken.

Melice was arrested last month after the bodies of five babies were found in her freezer.

When she applied for bail last week she said tearfully that her late boyfriend beat her so badly that she miscarried.

She said she kept the babies' bodies to be close to them.
