A woman who had been blind from the age of 11, regained her sight after banging her head on a coffee table.

Lisa Reid lost her sight as a child as a result of a tumour pressing down on her optic nerve.

She knelt down to kiss her guide dog Ami goodnight and hit her head on a coffee table.

She woke up the following morning to discover that she could she see again.

"I can't really find words to describe how it felt - amazing, fantastic," she told Daily Mail Australia .

"You can imagine not being able to see and then you can, you can't really describe that.

"To see the world again visually is a gift," she added.

Although the 38-year-old from Auckland is still legally blind, the knock partially restored her vision.

Speaking almost 14 years to the day after she regained her sight, Ms Reid said that one of the most shocking things was seeing that her brother had turned into man.

She told Auckland Now : "It's the little things. Like the colour of the grass, how blue the sky is - the things we all take for granted."

Reid added that one of the first things she did when her vision returned was to marvel at the drinks aisle at the supermarket because of what was now on offer.

Ms Reid, who is now a mother to daughter Maddison, revealed her story to raise awareness of New Zealand’s Blind Foundation, which helps her with her visual impairment.

She said the support of a guide dog helped her regain her confidence.

Every year the foundation hosts Blind Week - which started on October 29 this year and will run until November 3.
