A teacher suffered a heart attack and died in front of his class while teaching a Geography lesson last week.
Ian Babington, 45, had been a trainee teacher at Roundhill Academy in Leicester and was passionate about helping young people get their best start in life, family said.
When he collapsed, members of staff tried to revive him using a defibrillator and he was rushed to Glenfield Hospital.
But he couldn't be saved and parents were informed of his death in a letter sent home on Friday.
Tributes have been paid to Mr Babington by friends, family and colleagues.
His wife Mandy, 55, who lived with him in Mountsorrel, said: 'I'm numb with shock and devastated. Ian had a quiet, gentle nature, and a brilliant sense of humour that was full of wit.
'I can't thank the hospital enough for everything they did to save Ian, along with staff from the school. He was put on a ventilator but there was nothing they could do.'
James Tickle, principal of Roundhill Academy, said: 'Ian's death has been a huge shock for all members of The Roundhill Academy community and we are still trying to come to terms with this tragedy.
'Ian was making good progress as a trainee at the school and was well on the way to fulfilling his ambition of becoming a teacher.
'Ian was a really lovely person and well respected by all staff and students at The Roundhill Academy.
'Staff and students have been devastated by such sad news and counsellors have been available for anybody who has needed support following the incident.'
