A 43-year-old man from Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, South Africa, who asked his wife for a divorce was burned to death while he slept.
The wife allegedly waited for him to go to bed on Monday before throwing petrol over him and striking a match.
Raphael Maiela was covered in flames as he ran out of his house to find help only to find the gate of his yard locked.
He jumped over the fence into his neighbour's yard before collapsing.
Shocked residents tried to put out the fire but it was too late for the man.
He was taken to hospital with very serious burn wounds and died on Wednesday.
Angry neighbours wanted to burn the wife but she was saved by a patrolling police van.
One resident said: "We wanted to give her a taste of her own medicine. She's heartless. How could she do that to another human being?"
The dead man's 20-year-old son, Raphael Mathebula, said that his father told him he was treated badly by his wife.
"They used to fight all the time. She's a bully and also threatened to burn me when she's released from jail," he said.
"I ran away from home because I don't want to die like my father."
The son said he was staying with friends in the Johannesburg.
The SunTeam spoke to the suspect, who admitted to setting her husband alight.
"I acted out of anger. I apologised to his family and I'm not proud of what I did," she said.
A case of murder was opened and the woman appeared in court last week. She will be back in court on Thursday.
