A funeral director was apparently so desperate to pay off his bills and business costs that he faked the deaths of more than 70 people to pocket the insurance money.
Robin George Knight, 45, exploited the prepaid funeral contracts of 77 clients to fake their deaths so he could pay off his bills, the court heard.
And a judge at Holden Hills Magistrates Court in Adelaide, Australia, sentenced Knight to three years in jail yesterday after he pleaded guilty to around 100 counts of theft and deception.
'It is a daily struggle to live with the consequences of my actions, particularly how a number of people have been let down and left with a severe disadvantage,' he said.
'I deeply regret my actions and apologise to everybody concerned.'
The court heard that one of the insurance companies that had contracts through Knight's funeral home is refusing to honour the contracts of Knight's victims, meaning 38 people are now without their prepaid funeral service.
Magistrate Cathy Deland sentenced Knight to four years and six months in prison with a non-parole period of three years.
