The latest issue of Condé Nast's W features Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid on the cover, both knee-less.
The image, gracing W's 10th annual "art issue", is the work of artists Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin, photographer Jason Kibbler and stylist Patrick Mackie.
It's not entirely clear whether the lack-of-knees is a 'Photoshop fail', as some have declared, or a deliberate decision, to add to the overall weirdness of the picture.
Trecartin and Fitch's previous work has been described as a "sci-fi theater of the absurd" by Art in America, and W quotes Massimiliano Gioni, artistic director at New York's New Museum, saying of them: "They are probably the only ones directly wired to the future … Their vision of tomorrow is equally terrifying and liberating, Edenic and apocalyptic."
Diane Solway, the magazine's arts and culture director, sheds a little more light: "In Trecartin and Fitch's W commission, which they titled 'placebo pets,' Jenner and Hadid are super-friendly, highly adaptive domesticated animals in a humanoid zoo.
"The idea grew out of the artists wondering, as only they could, 'Who would survive if a superior alien humanoid species came to Earth?' Their answer: 'the friendliest.'"
